Not Being Stephen King
I was recently approached by a fan - a First Fan - with a request to supply a book for one of their friends. The Other Person is a fan of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series in which I have made a number of published contributions
I agreed to supply the book.
Whilst searching through the Contributor's Copies of a number of books in which I have appeared, I began to think about what should I write to the Other Person as an Author Dedication. The First Fan has asked me for a copy to introduce my writing to one of their friends - should I include the First Fan by name in the dedication? Perhaps it would be better only to dedicate it the Other Person? Maybe I should include my business card to legitimize the dedication?
Did Stephen King have these dilemmas early in his career, and how did he handle them? I sincerely doubt that King has these quandary's now - he has a staff to help and guide. For me, it's a one person show.
Perhaps that's the benefit of not being Stephen King. I don't have to sign thousands of books at mass events where people line up for hours. I don't have a room full of books that will need generic signatures before being shipped out. I still have that intimate fan base, where all (most of) my Fans are known to me personally.
Not being Stephen King may have an advantage.
I wonder if King ever sits around at book signings and asks himself "when is the next person that I know by name, going to show up."
I would suggest that those people that King knows by name, are his First Fans that he took care of in the early years, and still takes care of now. They don't have to show up at book signings - he sends them First Copies.
I'll write the First Fan into the dedication.
Maybe one day King will ask me to write a dedication for him.

Some Days Are Harder Than Others
Some days are harder than others.
The writers copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Angels and Miracles arrived today.
I cannot even look at the cover without crying.
My first copies usually go out to community organizations, libraries, and my Alma Mater Villanova College.
Not this time. They'll be going out to those who carried me through the story.
Anthony, Dave Parker, Judith, and one other.
One copy will be held back for his children, to read of their father impact.

Chicken Soup for the Soul #Stand4Heroes
Chalk up another appearance within the Chicken Soup for the Soul franchise.
On 7 June 2016, the next in their series of books will be released, titled Chicken Soul for the Soul: The Spirit of America.
My story, "Straight out of El Cajon" highlights the discussions I still have, ten years after arriving in the "new country" The irony of an Australian writing about the Spirit of America, has not been lost.
Royalties form the book will benefit the Bob Woodruff Foundation's #Stand4Heroes program for veterans.

There Was Another
In the United States, the last week of November signals the beginning of the "holiday" period. It starts with Thanksgiving, runs through Christmas and New Year, and finishes up somewhere around Superbowl Sunday.
This year, the house was empty for the first real time, not a child to be had, not a potato mashed, not a turkey carved, not an arrival recieved.
I could not have asked for a better window in which to complete two major articles that were approaching their deadline. By July 2016, you should be reading about an American Pioneer, but not the one whom you might think.
It turns out, there was another.

Lessons Learned on a Book Tour
Book tour stop, Manhattan, New York |
Book tours are no exception to the after action review process.
Here are 5 lessons learned from a 4 state, 2 country book tour.
- Take someone with you and have them manage the travel arrangements. Make it their job to check, and recheck the schedule. Twice on the Christmas in Canada tour I "overlooked" items that were important . That wouldn't have happened if I had shared the plan, You can't do it all and still handle the "business" of promotion.
- Local currency. Have some cash on hand, man cannot live on a credit card alone. There will be items you need cash for: tipping, postcards, taxis. (Memo: not all taxis in New York city accept Visa.)
- It will always be a journey. Some days are better than others, but they all make up the path you will travel.
- Make time on the journey for the traveling party. Go where they want, see what they see, eat what they eat, be with them on their journey.
- Bring home gifts. Not everyone will get to go where you have been. Remember those that helped you get there by bringing back a piece.

For The First Fans
Christmas In Canada has been released and the tour is about to start. On this tour I'll be accompanied by my father, visiting from Australia. The irony of an Australian living in Southern California doing a tour about Christmas in Canada has not been lost
Book tours are made for a variety of reasons, and in this instance, the book tour is not about my name on the cover, it's about the promotion of the title. 34 authors will meet to take part at the book signing in Toronto on November 4th, I will be one of a few traveling internationally. So why go?
For the first fans.
There are fans of "my" writing all over the world, those people who know of, or who found my writing and identified with it. There's my friends who are cheering me on. There's my daughters, some who walk around showing off the book, others who may one day get asked "did your Dad write this?" There's the distant contacts, the ones who know me through someone else. But the ones that I am endeared to the most are those who I should have treated better, and who still cheer for me.
They are the first fans. Thank you, for your belief.

Who's on a Canadian Book Tour?
Here's what I've learned about organizing a book tour for the forthcoming Chicken Soup for the Soul book, Christmas in Canada.
- There is no handbook or "Book Tour for Dummies" available.
- Canada is a long way from San Diego.
- There are no Canadian book stores in southern California.
...and the piece de resistance... - "Who's on First" has no comparison to an Australian on the phone to a Hispanic book store owner in the United States talking about a Canadian themed book.
